Originally published 16/4/22 – As I have continued studying for MA Photography at Norwich University of the Art and continued my work in Portraiture, I have been taking portraits outside, sometimes with people I know and sometimes walking up to strangers and asking to take their portraits. It can be challenging to get the fighting right outdoors – I have often mixed natural and artificial light – I have definitely achieved the best results by exposing for the natural light and using artificial light to boost the subject – especially shadows. I am particularly inspired by the Portrait of Britain series from Hoxton Mini Press – the books contain the winning images from the Portrait of Britain Competitions from the British Journal of Photography and 1854 Media (https://www.1854.photography/awards/portrait-of-britain/). These books are inspiring and brilliant representations of the people of Britain My goal is get a portrait into the next volume…watch this space!
